Hey, it’s Conor Cunneen – IrishmanSpeaks here

Once again sharing why I do what I do—with a smile and explaining my tag line “Improving People, Performance and Productivity – with a Smile.”

😊 Why I End with “With a Smile”

Someone once asked me, “Conor, why do you always sign off with ‘With a smile’?” Great question, and here’s the answer…

Because smiling feels good—for you and for everyone around you.

Smiles Build Connection

When I can get an audience to smile, chuckle, or laugh four or five times during a keynote or workshop, magic happens. The neurotransmitters kick in. Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin—they all start to flow. People feel better. And when people feel better, they connect better. This is not just gobbledygook (real professional word!) It’s based on significant research that shows once people laugh or smile, a better connection is generated and trust evolves.

And this isn’t just me talking blarney—it’s backed by science! Studies from Stanford, the University of North Carolina, and others show that when people laugh together, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin all kick in. That leads to less stress, more connection, and greater trust.

Dopamine and Reward:

  • “Dopamine in motivational control: rewarding, aversive, and alerting” – Berridge, K. C., & Robinson, T. E. (2016)

  • Key point: Dopamine is released in response to pleasurable stimuli like humor, which enhances motivation and attention.

🎤 I’m Not a Comedian—But I Love Humor

I’m not a comedian. I’m a business speaker who uses relevant humor to reinforce powerful messages.

Why? Because so many of the workshops, keynotes, and continuing education sessions we attend can be, let’s be honest—mind-numbingly boring. 😴

But when we use humor—humor that fits, that connects, and that reinforces the message—audiences perk up. They listen. They engage. And most importantly, they remember.

💡 Start with CHAPS

One of my micro-behavior tools is the CHAPS acronym, and the first letter—C—stands for Compliment.

It’s amazing how just a small, kind remark can shift someone’s day. But when I am speaking about the serious power of a Compliment, I try to bring humor to the message and suggest a really goofball compliment like:

“Wow, your hair doesn’t look as bad as it did yesterday!”

Gets a laugh, sure—but it opens a door to connection.

So when I say “With a smile,” I mean it. It’s not just a tagline—it’s a philosophy. A reminder that we all have the power to lift others… and ourselves.

✅ Final Thought

  • Smiles build connection.
  • Connection builds trust.
  • Trust helps you communicate with power, clarity, and warmth.

So whatever you’re presenting—do it with intention, and deliver it… with a smile.

With a smile,
Conor Cunneen
