As a motivational speaker for Administrative Professionals who once relied on many a harried (and I admit sometimes underappreciated) Administrative Assistant to keep me someway on the right track, I often think about what makes the difference in a workplace environment. I know the words “Thank You” are two of the most motivational in the English language. They are also words that employees at all levels need to hear more often and most definitely as a speaker for administrative professionals week, I strongly encourage the use of these words not just during administrative assistants / professionals week but every day of the work week AND every day of the weekend!

I believe that there are some simple but highly effective tips, tricks and techniques to enhance the work environment. I actually position them as Micro-Goals. One basic Micro-Goal that anyone can adopt is:

Hear the words “Thank You.” 

Now, you’re probably wondering “What is the Irish guy thinking about?” Two of the most motivational words in the English language are “Thank You.” Quite likely, you were told those words a few times yesterday, but you did not ay attention – they went in one ear and out the other.

However, if you set yourself a daily Micro-Goal to actually HEAR the words “Thank You,” a few things will happen.

1. You will do something definite to HEAR “Thank You.”

2. Someone will appreciate what you have done.

3. Your simple action will enhance that persons view of you, likely leading to a better work environment

4. Because you have achieved a simple Micro-Goal, you personally will feel a sense of achievement – no matter how minor – and feel better about yourself.
