The Power of Self-Deprecating Humor: Why Laughing at Yourself Wins Over Audiences
As a keynote speaker, I often use humor to reinforce my key business messages, whether I’m speaking to oncologists, obstetricians or ophthalmologists. Self-deprecating humor, or the art of poking fun at oneself, is a genuinely powerful tool for creating connection and relatability in presentations. For some reason, many people in my audience think I’m “special” because I’m the keynote speaker for the event. “Oh, wow, you’re the keynote” I hear often. I think they’re impressed but maybe there’s just thinking “Are you serious. YOU’RE the keynote!! Is there no one else they could get????” I work really hard to relate to my audience which is why I often use self-deprecating humor.
Here’s why a touch of humility and humor can make all the difference as you connect and engage with your audience.
-
Self-deprecating Humor Breaks Down Barriers
When you laugh at yourself, it shows you’re human, approachable, and don’t take yourself too seriously. Audiences appreciate speakers who don’t put themselves on a pedestal, and self-deprecating humor quickly lowers the guard between you and your listeners. If you have an option to make fun of yourself or someone else. Pick yourself.
-
Self-deprecating Humor Builds Trust
Trust is crucial, especially when presenting to a new group. Self-deprecating humor signals that you’re authentic and open. A quick joke about my tech struggles and being told to “turn your pc on and off” (GRRRRRR!) or a recent “oops” moment shows vulnerability, making your audience more likely to trust and connect with you.
-
Self-deprecating Humor is Disarming and Relatable
Everyone has quirks and imperfections. I mean even I do. When you embrace and laugh at your own, you’re giving your audience permission to relax and enjoy the ride. Self-deprecating humor creates an instant bond, making people feel that you’re on the same level.

Self-deprecating Humor – One example might be enough!
Hopefully, you are convinced that making fun of yourself will help you connect with your audience. When I’m putting a business concept to my audience, I will make the point and then say something like, “Gang, look, I’m the kind of guy that has to phone my wife to ask her for directions out of IKEA. If I can get this, I know you can.” That line gets a good laugh because it is relatable and one that most long suffering wives fully comprehend.
I might drop in one or two other self-deprecating terms during my keynote especially if telling a funny story involving my poor long suffering wife. While the story might be funny, the critical thing is that I come across as being the idiot, not my darling bride.
Make fun of yourself. You will connect better.
