Some Thoughts on Humor from a Two-Time Cancer Survivor Speaker

Cancer is not funny. But, as someone who has battled it twice, I’ve found that humor is often a very powerful medicine for patients, caregivers AND oncology professionals. As a Chicago-based keynote speaker, and a business humorist, I never imagined my journey with cancer would inspire one of my most uplifting keynotes. But when life hands you a prostatectomy, sometimes you just have to laugh and say, “It’s Just a Flesh Wound.”

Yes, that’s the title of my keynote—borrowed from Monty Python, because if you can’t laugh at adversity, what can you do?

A Cancer Diagnosis with a Side of Monty Python – Inspirational cancer survivor speaker

A few years back, I received the news that no man wants to hear: “You have prostate cancer.” Now, prostate cancer is one of those conditions that develops slowly, so I had time to explore my options, do my research, and, most importantly, listen to my wife who was an absolute rock through my two cancer journeys. My “information systems” (aka my wife) made it clear that I needed new pajamas for my hospital stay.

So, when I walked into Northwestern Memorial Hospital for surgery, I did so wearing pajamas proudly emblazoned with the Monty Python quote: “It’s Just a Flesh Wound.”  I’ve since worn them during my presentations to cancer survivor celebratations and for National Cancer Survivors Day events!!  SEE right!

The surgery went well. The sense of humor survived. And the experience left me with an even stronger belief in the power of attitude, resilience, and laughter which I try to bring to my keynote as an Inspirational cancer survivor speakerto cancer survivors and oncology professionals.

Not My First Bout with Cancer!

Of course, this wasn’t my first round with cancer. Years earlier, when living back in Ireland, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The doctors whipped that out too, leaving me to state now that, having had a thyroidectomy and a prostatectomy, I now suffer from a rare Irish condition known as “there’s not much left-o-me.”

And yet, I’m still here, still standing, and still laughing and blessed to be working as an Inspirational cancer survivor speaker.

Turning Life’s Challenges into Lessons (With a Laugh!)

As a keynote speaker and business humorist, I’ve always believed that humor is a powerful tool—not just for entertainment but for education and inspiration. I strive to provide Substance with Humor, blending my business experience from Ireland, the UK, and the USA with a healthy dose of Irish wit.

Whether speaking to corporate audiences, healthcare professionals, or survivors, my goal is simple: inspire, uplift, and leave them laughing. And let’s be honest—any conference or event could use a little feel-good energy.

Why an Inspirational cancer survivor speaker is Perfect for Survivorship Events

Let’s be honest—cancer is no laughing matter. But laughter? That’s a powerful thing. It lifts spirits, eases tension, and reminds us that even in the toughest times, there’s still joy to be found. That’s why hiring a humorous motivational cancer survivor speaker isn’t just a good idea—it’s a great idea.

As someone who’s had two bouts with cancer (and lived to joke about it), I know firsthand the rollercoaster of emotions survivorship brings. And I also know that after all the tests, treatments, and terrifying moments, survivors don’t just need another medical lecture—they need a reason to smile, a reason to feel hopeful, and a reason to celebrate how far they’ve come.

A speaker who’s been there can connect with the audience on a deeply personal level. One who brings humor and inspiration can help survivors find strength in their journey, laughter in their struggles, and motivation to keep moving forward.

Because at the end of the day, survivorship isn’t just about getting through cancer—it’s about living beyond it. And a little laughter along the way makes that journey even better.

Hi! How can I help you?
