Improve Employee Engagement and Self Worth through CHAPS!
Improve Employee Engagement through CHAPS!
The Concept: As a manager / leader, you can not substantially improve employee net worth. However, you CAN improve employee Engagement and Self Worth.
The old adage that people don’t leave companies, they leave bosses is one every association executive should ponder in this era of the “Great Resignation.” In a highly competitive marketplace, the last thing you want is high labor turnover and poor retention.
One very powerful concept to improve employee retention AND build your brand as an employer is to constantly work to the mantra that “I may not be able to substantially improve employee net worth, but I sure as heck CAN Improve employee Self Worth and as a result improve employee engagement.
There is no secret to making this happen. However, this does not mean it happens! In fact, I would posit that very few leaders / managers take deliberate, consistent action to make their colleagues / co-workers feel valued and appreciated. My eyes roll when I hear “Employees are our greatest asset” and indeed in many organizations I have consulted in, the self-same employees wonder why they don’t feel they are the “greatest asset.”
Numerous surveys including one from the American Psychological Association have found that employees who feel valued are more productive in the workplace because of higher levels of engagement, satisfaction and motivation, compared to those who do not feel valued by their employers.
You can make this happen but it needs consistent, deliberate activities demonstrating that your team is valued. A very simple process which will improve employee self-worth is based around Five Micro-Goals that spell the acronym CHAPS which I will speak to at annual conference
C – Compliment team members regularly
H – Hear the words “Thank You” from your team based on something you do to generate those words (See more on Employee Engagement TIp “Hear”)
A – Address team members by name in conversation. THE most impactful word when in conversation with someone is their name (See how this will help improve Employee Engagement)
P – Consistently, Deliberately use Positive words, Positive phrases in your interaction with team members
S – Smile. No, I’m not asking you to Smile. I’m asking you to take deliberate regular action to put a Smile on employee’s face. And when you make someone Smile, what do you do?
