Tip #4 to a Great Workplace For Administrative Assistants (and everyone else!)

Administrative Assistants Inspirational Motivational Speaker Conor Cunneen writes: We are all creatures of our environment – The environment you create and the environment others create. When I reflect on the people I enjoyed working with, when I reflect on the people, bosses, colleagues, subordinates that I would go the extra yard for, one characteristic sticks out. These people were positive in word and thought.

There is one simple way to improve the positivity in your environment. Take a deliberate, intentional decision to use positive words in your conversation with colleagues. I’m not asking you to go crazy, but how often do you use words like

Amazing, Awesome

Bright, Bubbly,

Considerate, Cheerful

Dynamic, Delightful

Energizing, Effective

Focused,  Friendly, Fearless

You know that if someone says you are:

Amazing, Awesome

Bright, Bubbly,

Considerate, Cheerful

Dynamic, Delightful

Energizing, Effective

Focused,  Friendly, Fearless, that you will respond positively. You will appreciate that person who says positive things about you. Guess what? If you say positive things to that person, they are likely to respond positively and they will appreciate you.

So why not use positive words more often? Set yourself a daily Micro-Goal to say something positive to a co-worker or colleague today and everyday. Setting and achieving this MicroGoal will impact your colleagues and you in – guess what? – a positive manner.

Motivational Speaker for Administrative Professionals: Tip #2 to a Great Workplace

HEAR the words “THANK YOU.”

As a motivational speaker for Administrative Professionals who once relied on many a harried (and I admit sometimes underappreciated) Administrative Assistant to keep me someway on the right track, and now as a speaker for Administrative Professionals Day / Week, I often think about what makes the difference in a workplace environment.

Motivational Speaker for Administrative Professionals: Here’s Tip #2 to a Great Workplace: HEAR the words “Thank You.”

I believe that there are some simple but highly effective tips, tricks and techniques to enhance the work environment. I actually position them as Micro-Goals. One basic Micro-Goal that anyone can adopt is:

Hear the words “Thank You.”

Now, you’re probably wondering “What is the Irish guy thinking about?” Two of the most motivational words in the English language are “Thank You.” Quite likely, you were told those words a few times yesterday, but you did not ay attention – they went in one ear and out the other.

However, if you set yourself a daily Micro-Goal to actually HEAR the words “Thank You,” a few things will happen.

  1. You will do something definite to HEAR “Thank You.”

  2. Someone will appreciate what you have done.

  3. Your simple action will enhance that persons view of you, likely leading to a better work environment

  4. Because you have achieved a simple Micro-Goal, you personally will feel a sense of achievement – no matter how minor – and feel better about yourself.

I know the words “Thank You” are two of the most motivational in the English language. They are also words that employees at all levels need to hear more often and most definitely as a speaker for administrative professionals week, I strongly encourage the use of these words not just during administrative assistants / professionals week but every day of the work week AND every day of the weekend!

Things Bosses Do To Drive Administrative Professionals / Assistants Mad!

Administrative Professionals Motivational Speaker: Compliment Your Colleagues

As a speaker who once relied on Administrative Professionals to keep me someway on the right track, and now as a speaker for Administrative Professionals Day / Week, I often think about what makes the difference in a workplace environment.

As you will see from this short video clip, I truly believe that complements are one of the best ways to create a powerful and lasting bond with your fellow administrative assistants, work colleagues, subordinates or superiors.

Everyone appreciates complements.

Everyone also appreciates the person who gives the complement.

So, here’s the question folks. Do you complement your colleagues?

Things Bosses Do To Drive Administrative Professionals / Assistants Mad!

The Very Impressive Lexi Thompson and Choosing Your Attitude

This gallery contains 1 photo.

Lexi Thompson and What do I want my Attitude to be?

In his wonderful book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl wrote that everything can be taken from a person, except the ability to choose your attitude in even the worst circumstances.

Whether we like it or not, we all hit pot holes and speed bumps and  one person who really hit that pot hole yesterday was Lexi Thompson, and I am sure Viktor Frankl would be proud of her.

The very impressive Lexi Thompson

The young golfer was penalized FOUR strokes for an infraction that occurred the previous day after some “guy eating Cheetos at home” (per @SmylieKaufman10 ) felt obliged to report a perceived infringement.

A cruise to victory was derailed, but Lexi’s response was quite simply wonderful. Although obviously upset, she recovered sufficiently to force a play-off. She lost the playoff but won the admiration of so many with her Attitude including signing autographs for fans at the end of the day. You have to say “Well done, young lady.”

The Question To Ask When Things Go Wrong

When we hit those speed bumps and potholes, the question that will help you, the question that helps me regularly is “What do I want my Attitude to be?”

The question is powerful, because when you ask that question, you are unlikely to say, “I want to be angry, I want to be annoyed, I want to be upset. “

No, when you ask “What do I want my attitude to be?” you are much more likely to respond, “I don’t want to be angry, I don’t want to be upset, I don’t want to be annoyed” and having answered the question that way, you will make some effort not to be angry, not to be annoyed, not to be upset.

“What do I want my attitude to be?”  does work. Even when stopped by Illinois’ finest as the above clip illustrates.

Keep on keepin’ on, good people!
