🎤 You Don’t Have to Be Funny to Be Funny

Tips for Adding Humor to Your Presentation — Without Being a Comedian

Hey, it’s Conor Cunneen — IrishmanSpeaks — here with a few simple, implementable tips to help you add humor to your presentations and connect better with your audience.

Now, before you start sweating at the idea of telling jokes or doing stand-up, let me tell you:

You don’t have to be funny… to be funny.

Surprising? Maybe. True? Absolutely.

🧠 It’s Not About Comedy — It’s About Connection

What I’m talking about here isn’t stand-up comedy. It’s about using everyday humor — the kind you see, hear, and experience in daily life — to reinforce your key points and keep your audience engaged.

Why is Humor Important?

Because when someone smiles or laughs—even just a little—the brain releases feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins. These brain chemicals improve mood, lower defenses, and create a sense of bonding and openness. Translation? People are more likely to like you, trust you, and do business with you when you put a smile on their face.

So how do you make that happen?

📋 Listen, Capture, Record

Let me give you an example.

Last summer, I’m walking down a street in Chicago, and there’s a panhandler holding a sign that reads:

“Need money for a hooker.”

Now THAT’S advertising.

I actually walked past, paused, turned back and thought, “Did I read that properly?” I did. And you know what? I dropped him a bit more than a dollar because, honestly, I think the guy’s a marketing genius in disguise.

Now, I don’t tell that story just for a laugh. If I’m speaking to a marketing or sales group, I use that as a powerful example of:

  • A catchy headline
  • Immediate connection
  • And unforgettable messaging

That’s what humor does. It anchors the idea or reinforces your key message. It gives your audience a reason to remember.

Remember: Listen, Capture, Record. I did not create that hooker image. What I did do was I “listened” (OK, watched), captured, and recorded. You can do the same.

😄 Sprinkle It — Don’t Drench It

If you’re giving a 45-minute talk, you don’t need to deliver non-stop punchlines.

Three, maybe five smiles or chuckles during your presentation are enough for your audience to say:

“That was a great session. Informative, relevant — and fun.”

The humor shouldn’t distract. It should enhance.

📣 The Irishman’s Final Thoughts to Help You Add Humor to your Presentation

Humor is a powerful tool in any presentation — not for comedy’s sake, but to:

  • Reinforce your message
  • Engage your audience
  • And make you more likeable and memorable

So remember:

  • Listen for humor in everyday life
  • Capture it in a notebook or phone
  • Use it when it fits naturally

And if you get your audience to smile just a few times? That’s enough to make your message stick.
