Things Bosses do to Drive Administrative Assistants Mad

Salary.com surveyed a number of Executive/Administrative Assistants and asked what annoyed them about their bosses. Some of the comments will make you smile, some might incite PTSD.

  1. Lack of Consistency in how they want work done.
  2. Part-time babysitter! Yup, the boss brings the kids into work
  3. Don’t take it out on me! The boss needs to vent at someone and, hey, who could be easier than  the ever present admin.
  4. I need it now! This despite the fact that the boss has had the past week to get the task completed!
  5. Double-check everything! Is there anything worse than a micro-manager?
  6. Lack of appreciation. This is not just a comment related to Admins. In general, we do not complement our colleagues, workmates and family enough. See Micro-Goal #1 to a Great Workplace.

SOURCE:  Letter excerpt sent by Mark Twain, January 1906 ( Twain was commenting on a speech where he bombed. For more detail see What Mark Twain Learned Me ’bout Public Speakin’)

“I am forever your debtor for reminding me of that curious passage in my life. During the first year or two after it happened, I could not bear to think of it. My pain and shame were so intense, and my sense of having been an imbecile so settled, established and confirmed, that I drove the episode entirely from my mind—and so all these twenty-eight or twenty-nine years I have lived in the conviction that my performance of that time was coarse,   VULGAR   and destitute of humor. But your suggestion that you and your family found humor in it twenty-eight years ago moved me to look into the matter. So I commissioned a Boston typewriter to delve among the Boston papers of that bygone time and send me a copy of it……………..

Your Behavior Creates Business and Personal Brand

For many people, the tangible differences between the product they sell and what competitors sell is either marginal or non-existent. The purchase decision depends on what customers THINK of the product – in other words what they consider the brand image to be. Your success in business and whether people want to work with you is also determined by your brand image, your business brand or your personal brand.

People do business with people thy like is a clichéd phrase, but true. It is also true that your behavior creates your brand: that your behavior determines what people say about you, and what people say about you IS your brand.

What Is Your Personal Brand?

So, the question is; “What is your (personal) brand?” “What do your customers and clients say about you and your business?” Once upon a time, I was surprised that people did not have a clear idea what they wanted their customers to say about their business, product or service. In other words, they gave very little thought to their brand image, which potentially creates a problem. If you are not clear what you want your customers to say, it is going to be difficult to create the optimal experience.

Three Words to a Better Personal Brand

One very simple exercise to clarify your brand image is to write on the back of your business card the three words you would like clients / work colleagues say about you after you have left the room.

In effect, you are writing your Brand Promise. Place that business card in with your driver’s license or credit cards, so the next time you take your credit card or license out, you will see those three words. Then, ask yourself “Would any of my clients / work colleagues use any of those three words to describe my behavior?” Those three words provide a simple Brand Promise, but a Brand Promise is useless unless implemented. The business card exercise is simple but truly effective. I have had numerous clients show me their dog eared business card months after presenting this concept. Those clients understand:

Your Behavior creates your Business and Personal Brand

Your Behavior determines what people say about you

What people say about you IS your Brand.

So what is your Brand?
