As one who is deadly serious about his craft, Conor reads and studies a lot about the craft of speech, speech making and speech writing.
Following are a number of books that should be of interest to anyone who is involved in speech writing, public speaking and which would be well worth reading if you are interested in Toastmasters Accredited Speaker Program.
Sorensen shows how he and JFK wrote some of his great speeches. He is extraordinarily self-effacing in terms of his contribution to Kennedy's work, most obviously when discussing Profiles in Courage where despite all evidence to the contrary, he still maintains Kennedy was the sole author. This is a memoir more than a book on speechwriting, but a great read.
I know Kevin O'Connor and Cyndi Maxey personally, so I expected good content and advice re speech content, material and presentation skills.
That is exactly what you will get in this book. There is nothing dramatically new in this book, but all the advice is presented extremely well and cogently. Their section on "Create a Connection" is particularly good. One of the best books on public speaking out there."
NO secrets, BUT plenty of good material and anecdotes to help the budding or experienced speaker become much, much better. Gallo has worked in communications for much of his life bringing together a rich litany of anecdotes and personalities.
The irony is that one of Gallo's secrets is "Clarity." The book cover is one of the most cluttered efforts on the shelves. Otherwise, a really good book
Timeless wisdom from Lilly Walters who ran her own speakers bureau and knows what works / doesn't work. She provides 11 steps to successful speeches and speechmaking. She provides a detailed checklist which I personally find useful.
Abraham Lincoln, probably the finest presidential speech writer of them all, allegedly said, "For those who like this sort of thing, they'll like this sort of thing." Well, Abe and anyone with even the slightest interest in US politics won't just like this book, they would make it mandatory reading for speechwriters. Great anecdotes and history about presidential speech writing.
Samuel Rosenman was speechwriter for FDR. If lucky, you will find this at your local library (published 1952). A book rightly mentioned by Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan as a "classic."
