One of the great joys of this speaker career is the never ending process of discovery. When growing up in Ireland, Mark Twain was but a faint and distant name. It is only recently that I have come to appreciate what a wonderful character and wonderful writer he was.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Mark Twain was THE first humorous keynote business speaker. Some might say simply he was the first humorous keynote speaker. He paved a path for the  keynote speaker. I am sure he would have much to say as to how today's speakers position themselves (myself included) in a rather hyperbolic fashion e.g. "Humorous  Funny Inspirational Keynote Business Speaker" or in a really original twist! "Inspirational Humorous Funny Business Keynote Speaker."

As a Humorous Keynote Speaker, much of Mark Twain's material was based on exaggeration. Plying my own trade as a humorous business speaker, I think Mark Twain would forgive me and other keynote speakers for using the same technique. He would forgive us as long as we are professional and practice (nay perfect) our craft. If you peruse the selection of Twain's speeches on this website, you will see that the man practiced, practiced, practiced. He wrote his extemperaneous speeches in advance and as William Dean Howell's could testify, rehearsed every phrase, every pause, every voice intonation.

Yes, as a humorous keynote speaker (with the Gift of GAB), I and many others can thank Mark Twain for paving the way for all of us Humorous, Inspirational, Funny, Motivational, Keynote Business Speakers who now earn a good living. But we should never forget that Twain worked really hard at his profession. Being a Funny, Motivational, Humorous, Inspirational Keynote Business Speaker (Like Twain, I mix my words just to do your head in) is easy when you work really hard at it. That is one lesson I have learned from THE FIRST HUMOROUS BUSINESS SPEAKER
